What is joy?

Could it be the sunbeam
that breaks through
the clouds on a cold, grey day?
the one pure, sweet note,
in a sad song,
that awakens the heart to a new possibility?
could it be
a smile from a stranger,
a shared glance that triggers
a deeper knowing?
a spring flower,
pushing through the snow,
a bright autumn leaf,
twirling in the wind….

Perhaps joy comes in
a thousand ways,
beckoning us to freedom,
to join the eternal dance…
